In the 20th century Tyler Brûlé, a war journalist who became an editor, created the magazine Wallpaper, the bible of contemporary living, that he eventually sold. In the following century, 2007 to be exact, he repeated his entrepreneurial feat by creating the international magazine Monocle. This monthly luxury magazine, which includes articles on culture, politics, economy and design, also features trendy addresses. Everything is hand-selected by an international, “old-school” staff of reporters and shown in a meticulous layout. “The world is our subject, the world is our market”, claims this frequent flyer whose quest for excellence means he frequents business-class regulars and Platinum credit card holders.
Is the written press struggling? Maybe, but Monocle is flying high! To counterbalance digitalization,
Tyler Brûlé prefers quality paper and also publishes books including The Monocle Guide to Good Businessand The Monocle Guide to Better Living. This master of good taste has opened six boutiques to sell a trendy selection of products that are either conceived in his design studio or are the result of partnerships with prestigious brands. In London and Tokyo, he develops the brand name with The Monocle Café. And since 2011, Monocle 24 radio has been broadcasting the same philosophy of exclusivity. This unique business model defines the codes of an antibling, international luxury. They say the man is a visionary. We certainly can’t refute that!
