The MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology has opened its doors on 30th June 2016 with the purpose of combining the three different fields and provide the ultimate news and achievements regarding each industry. MAAT is composed of two buildings and it was designed by the architect Amanda Levete, who has opted to combine the ancient Portuguese industrial architecture with innovative and avant-garde styles and concepts.

The result is an outstanding building that serves as the main stage to showcase national and international exhibitions with contributions from contemporary artists, architects and thinkers. Through MAAT, the EDP Foundation brings a whole new energy to the Lisbon city. MAAT is a place for all audiences, of all ages.

The Museum has been awarded The Design Prize for 2017 at a ceremony in Milan. The Design Prize is an annual award programme that honours excellence in terms of design culture on a global scale that is sponsored by Designboom, Abitare magazine, and the municipality of Milan.

Currently, at MAAT visitors can get mesmerised by the installation of APQHome designed by Ana Pérez-Quiroga and curated by Pedro Gadanho. The installation consists of a habitable domestic space inside the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, where guests can stay for 2 days and fully enjoy a completely different concept of interior design and decoration.

The artist made a comprehensive study to select the best and the most appropriate materials for producing this innovative concept. Corticeira Amorim, the world’s largest cork producer and manufacturer, is one of the corporate partners of the project APQHome in which the cork plays a very important role, as it does in Portuguese Culture.

“The cork composites used – ranging from the cork granulates (used in the garden beds or to fill the stools) to the rolls – are exceptional not only because of their formal value but because in tactile terms they create an irresistible urge to touch them,” said Ana Pérez-Quiroga about the uses of cork in this project.
