K.E.V.A is the acronym for “Club for Aesthetic Education of the Actor” and this restaurant was one of the most popular meeting spots for actors in the past. That’s not surprising given that the street where it’s located is known as the Bulgarian “Broadway” and most of Sofia’s theatres are located nearby.
The unpretentious modern atmosphere of this restaurant in the garden of the School for Performing Arts makes it a place to come back to again and again. Prices are purposely cheap to attract an arty, intellectual crowd: a glass of wine costs just 2.50 leva, unheard of in the centre of Sofia. The menu offers a few home-made Bulgarian dishes such as bean stew with sausage, as well as salads and grilled meats.
Both indoors and out are done out in simple white wooden furniture; a parachute-type canopy hangs over the courtyard. In the winter it turns into a smoking ‘bubble’. Various theatrical performances take place indoors and guests are welcome to take their food inside and watch while they eat.
Just recently the place got renovated and nowadays it enjoys renewed popularity among the general public. You could still see some of the most famous Bulgarian actors eating dinner there, though. K.E.V.A. has a really nice garden but it’s usually full of people so a reservation might not be a bad idea.
A little piece of advice: you should try the homemade lemonade they offer. It’s actually the perfect virgin Mojito. You can also find on the second floor a small hall with a stage where they plan to organize different events like karaoke, movie screenings and concerts.
