The Gorgeous Wine Cellar Designed by Philippe Starck in Bordeaux

The renown French designer Philippe Starck has presented, last summer, an astonishing and gorgeous design of a cellar, for the Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, a private wine estate in Bordeaux. The designed was performed by Starck in collaboration with the architect Luc Arsène-Henry from the LA/HAT Architect Studio.

The project was presented to the public on 24th June 2016, the restoration work was carried out on the grounds of the property which includes a new entrance and the reconstructions of the hydraulic systems and fountain, dating back to the 15th century.

Apart from the aesthetic aspect, the Chateau’s wetland reconstruction improves the water flow and protect the biodiversity specific to this amazing place.

The amazing cellar has 2000 square meters of monolithic construction which is surrounded by water and acts as a thermal steering wheel, providing the winery with a perfect environment to allow the wine to tolerate any temperature or season without being affected. Complementing the form, Starck and Arsène-Henry included well-arranged glass and metal pieces to improve the scenario, combining it with impressive lighting effects.

It would be extremely easy to make a flamboyant building to show how much genius, Luc Arsene-Henry and myself, but where would be the power of wine, the magic of wine? So we made a steel blade!” said Philippe Starck during the presentation. He continued saying: “It is a ship, carrying our wines to the four corners of the world”

“As a blade fallen from the sky in a superb copse of tall trees on either side, flanked by vine-covered slopes, the new cellar distributes the four levels of various wine-making and reception areas,” said Arsène-Henry.

Regarding the barrel cellar, Starck said “The wine’s home had to be evocative, a minimum, an institution, a reflection,” and Arsène-Henry concluded saying: “Above all, we wanted to make this cellar an efficient tool.”
