The City of Birmingham, Alabama, is a municipal corporation under the laws of the State of Alabama. Birmingham is the largest city in the state with a population currently estimated at 242,820, and a metro population of 1,079,089.
Nestled at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at the cross-section of two major railroads, the city was once the primary industrial center of the southern United States. At the height of the nation’s manufacturing age, the city grew so fast in population, it was called the “Magic City.” Today, Birmingham has transformed itself into a medical research, banking and service-based economy, making it one of the nation’s most livable cities with a vibrant downtown, a burgeoning loft community, a world-class culinary scene and more green space per capita than any other city in the nation.

Art Shows
The Birmingham Art Association (BAA) was founded in 1908 as the Birmingham Art Club, making the group one of the city’s earliest organizations led by both artists and art patrons. Birmingham artists Della Dryer, Willie mclaughlin, Alice Rumph and Mamie Holfield, formed the group primarily to promote the arts of the city. They drew together 57 charter members and soon were entertaining such celebrities as G. E. Moretti, sculptor of the world’s largest cast-iron statue, “Vulcan,” a Birmingham landmark for 100 years. Famed landscape and portrait painter Nicholas R. Brewer lectured to the members in the 1920′s.
Points of Interest
Birmingham used to make a lot of iron — its geology gave it all the ingredients right in one place. So if you wanted a statue of a god that might represent what Birmingham did best, you’re looking at Vulcan. The statue’s claim to fame is that it’s the largest cast iron statue in the world. I know, I don’t care either — but the view of the city from the park and up on the statue is worth a go.
