Atchison (Kansas) – City Guide

The name of the city is a tribute to David Rice Atchison, Old Senator of USA.

Atchison is a city situated along the Missouri River in the eastern part of Atchison County. The name of the city is a tribute to David Rice Atchison, Old Senator of USA.

Atchison was the birthplace of aviatrix Amelia Earhart, and the Amelia Earhart Festival is held annually in July. Is also home of Benedictine College and a Catholic liberal-arts college. Is often called one of the most haunted places in America, due to the city’s ghost-story heritage.

Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum:

The home was designated a National Historic Site in 1971. In 1984, the Ninety-Nines (an International Organization of Licensed Women Pilots) acquired the home. Much of the house has been restored to its condition at the time of Amelia Earhart’s birth. The home has period furniture and features Earhart’s personal and family memorabilia, and the former kitchen now houses a modest gift shop.

Amelia Earthart was pioneered in aviation of USA.

Atchison County Historical Society Museum:

This museum in the restored Santa Fe Depot traces the history of the region. Exhibits highlight Atchison’s transition from a bend in the Missouri River to a busy commercial center for steamboats, westward-bound wagon trains and the railroads. Highlights include a display of Amelia Earhart’s personal effects, a large collection of rare guns dating back to the Revolutionary War and displays on the Lewis & Clark expedition.
