The Carnival of Venice is one of the greatest and oldest carnivals in the world since the first documents found with the word “carnival” and describing the popular festival of Venice date from 1094.
At that time, as expected, the city’s streets get crowded and the main goal is to arrive at Piazza San Marco, where the masquerade parade and the most important events take place. Through the streets, you will find little shops and benches selling masks and costumes, exuding the Venetian style, of course.
Some interesting events are:
– Corteo Acqueo (Parade on Water)
On Sunday 22nd of February 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in Punta della Dogana, there is a boat parade that runs throughout the Grand Canal until reaching the famous Cannareggio River. With the arrival of the boats, the gastronomic booths open to the public, offering the most traditional Venitian food, including the famous “cicheti”, and the typical carnival candies such as “le frittelle” and “galani”.
– Volo dell’Angelo (The Angel Flight)
The Angel Flight is the official opening of the Venice Carnival. A columbine woman (generally interpreted by the “Maria” elected in the previous carnival) descends “flying” the Campanile di San Marco towards the yard of Palazzo Ducale. In her hand, she holds a scepter, which will be delivered to the Doge (as the maximum leader of the Republic of Venice) to officially open the Venice Carnival.
– Premiazione Della Maria (Maria’s Award)
Maria’s Award is the coronation of a sort of “carnival queen” of Venice. Almost a few days before, the 10 people jury select the twelve girls between the ages of 18 and 26 that will participate in Maria’s parade. On the penultimate day of Carnival, during the Gran Gala in Ca ‘Vendramin Calergi, the most beautiful girl will be chosen to be Maria do Carnaval, who will be awarded on the following day. The Maria awards ceremony takes place at Piazza San Marco on 28th February 2017 at 4:00 p.m.
