Hamburg – City Guide

Hamburg, also know “North Veneza” because the watercourses and canals.

The city won the award Travellers Choise 2012.

Museums

Hamburg has a wide selection of museums and galleries to explore, ranging from major art collections and exciting historical exhibitions.

International Maritime Museum:

This private maritime collection, the largest in the world, has been housed in the historic Kaispeicher B warehouse in the Harbour City since 25 June 2008. In its first year, over 150,000 people have already visited the privately managed seafaring museum.

Kunsthalle Museum:

The Hamburger Kunsthalle on GlockengieBerwall is the largest art museum in Germany. The Italian Renaissance style building from the year 1869 later received port modern additions to its structure.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is the largest art museum in Germany. The highlights of the collection are the medieval alters of Master Bertram and Master Francke, Dutch paint work of the 17century, paintings of the German romanticism period,.impressionism and classic modernism, as well as international contemporary art as of 1950.

Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe:

The Museum of Arts and Crafts is located in neo-renaissance palace similar building (1867). It is one of the most important museums of applied arts in Europe. The collections displayed range from the antique to the present and encompass fragments of European, Islamic and the Far Eastern culture.

The museum displays collections and exhibitions of arts and craft, interior design and photography from Europe, the Middle and Far East. The collections span all periods of time from the Ancient World to the present day.

Galleries

Deichtorhallen:

The Deichtorhallen is one of the best known exhibition galleries worldwide, with a remarkable hall for contemporary art.

Kunsthalle Glockengießerwall:

Exhibiting more modern art, fine collections by famous masters can also be found at smaller privately owned art galleries in Hamburg.

Peter Borchardt Gallerie:

The Peter Borchardt Galerie is one of Hamburg’s leading contemporary art galleries. Rainer Fetting, Helle Jetzig, Seamus Nicolson and Eun Nim Ro have appeared here.

Other renowned artist like Robert Schad, Rik van Iersel (NL) and Markus Willeke have all played a part in the success of the Peter Borchardt Galerie. Of late the gallery has also become famous for its influence into the world of architecture and design.

Milchmadchen:

Very lovely gift shop with a beautiful collection of little handcrafted art pieces, souvenirs and other special things.

HHDC:

The Design Center Hamburg, HHDC, is an independent agency, that project for the development of communication strategies, highly creative solutions and outstanding design.

Don’t forget to visit the streets DeichstraBe (old shopping street, with residential houses and buildings for the XVII and XIX century);
Contless restaurants are also found in this street and on the street Reeperbahn (most famous street of Hamburg, for their entertainment and leisure)
